HAWK NLJD MODEL 450
Designed for the detection, location and analysis of concealed electronic devices. Will detect and locate hidden electronic devices (bugs & taps) whether powered or not. 2nd & 3rd harmonic detection and demodulation. Variable output power from 60mW to 1Watt. Omni (non-polarised) antenna. Small, lightweight and compact only 1.5kg. Uses snap-on rechargable batteries or mains.
Non Linear Junction Detection
The HAWK Non-Linear Junction Detector (NLJD) was introduced in the mid 1980's for the detection of hidden electronic circuits, and has undergone many development changes since it first appeared on the market. The HAWK Model 450 is Winkelmann's latest non-linear junction detector. A non-linear junction (NLJ) is a junction, which conducts electricity in one direction only. Such junctions occur in every diode, transistor and integrated circuit (IC). The HAWK NLJD Model 450 locates concealed electronic circuits incorporating transistors and diodes (NLJs), whether active or inactive. The unit therefore, is an essential tool for electronic countermeasure searches, explosive ordnance disposal and a variety of security evaluation procedures. HAWK 450 System Introduction
The Hawk Model 450 incorporates the very latest technology in non-linear junction evaluation. Radio Transmitters, Power Amplified Microphones, Electronic Timers all contain NLJs and will be detected by the HAWK even if they are embedded in walls and switched off. A pure radio frequency signal is transmitted by HAWK and absorbed by a non-linear junction, which inturn re-radiates on harmonically related frequencies, which are picked up by HAWK's sensitive receivers. The transmitter and two receivers are frequency-synthesised thereby completely eliminating frequency drift. The transmitter design uses a crystal-reference synthesiser at output frequency for spectral purity, efficiency and linearity. The two receivers have extemely good RF isolation and are locked to the transmitter frequency. HAWK 450 System Description
Every element of the HAWK 450 has been designed to create an instrument that satisfies the very highest standards, in terms of functionality, ease of operation and reliability. As a result the Winkelmann HAWK 450 offers a performance that is second to none in terms of quality, cost and operation. The HAWK combines an extermely pure radio transmission with very selective and sensitive receivers. Using our unique technology the unit will automatically compare the second and third harmonic return signals and indicates whether the response is from an electronic or natural source. This advanced system consists of the main unit fitted into a carrying pouch with shoulder strap, antenna, rechargable snap-on batteries, battery charger, headphones, test target and operator's manual all housed in a compartmentalised flight case. The HAWK 450 is an integral self-monitoring system with crystal control phase lock loop stability. No fine-tuning is required.
Technical Operation Features
An inherent problem associated with NLJD operation is "false targets" - natural diodes can re-radiate in the manner of a synthetic transistor. Natural diodes are generally due to corrosion between metal and related substances, also some crystals may react. The 2nd and 3rd harmonic return reflected by non-linear junctions varies depending on the material. Natural junctions will return a greater relative 3rd harmonic signal than synthetic junctions. With the introduction of 3rd harmonic detection, AM/FM demodulation, squelch control, HAWK's sophisticated display for signal comparison and higher signal power output, operators now have a detector that will effectively differentiate the response from a true electronic circuit and a naturally occurring metal junction. Operational FeaturesTo operate, the 'Hawk' antenna head is swept over the search area. The intention is to trigger a reaction in target diodes. The HAWK antenna radiates a pure signal at 888MHz. When this signal encounters an electronic device, the signal is returned at harmonically related frequencies, 2nd harmonic being 1776MHz, 3rd harmonic 2664MHz. The Hawk automatically compares signals and indicates whether the response is false (green), or genuine (red). This is shown both on the control panel and by the LED on the antenna head. The system also produces an audio tone (Geiger-counter tone). The field strength of a non-linear junction causes successive bars on the control panel to light up and the audio tone 'clicks' to increase. The Omni non-polarised antenna allows efficient detection of return signals regardless of the orientation of the sweep antenna head.

Countermeasure searches can be monotous, repititive and stressfull in certain enviroments; non linear junction detection is an extremely powerful search technique in addition to normal physical search procedures. The Hawk 450 incorporates innovative technology to give the user superior performance. The unit is extremely user-friendly and non-technical personnel can be using the system effectively within a few hours.
